The Bible Window

The first thing we notice is that the Bible is open - it does not remain a closed Book to us. The Word of God is intelligible to us because its content, that toward which everything in Scripture points, is Jesus of Nazareth, the Word of God (John 1:1).

Jesus sums up all that the Scriptures have to say to us, both Law and Gospel, because He is the True and full revelation of God (John 17:6-8). He is the Alpha and the Omega (Revelation 1:8), the Beginning and the End of all things, for in the beginning He was the Word in Whom and through Whom God called order and creation out of chaos (Genesis 1:3) and the Everliving One in Whom at the end all will be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:22).

As the Beginning and the End of our existence, Jesus becomes the One to Whom we must cling in order to have Life. We are grafted into such a Life from God by becoming part of the Vine, Jesus Himself (John 15:1), that runs through the Scriptures. Through hearing the Word proclaimed in all its glory God stirs up faith and trust in Him (Romans 10:14) that binds us to Him forever and enables us to enjoy the fruit (John 15:5) of being in His loving presence for all eternity.
